I facilitated this process for Spitalfields City Farm in London in 2010. Spitalfields, or Spitz as it is affectionately known as, is a buzzing community project in the heart of London. Located in Tower Hamlets, one of the poorest Boroughs in London with a predominantly Bengali and Somali community, just next to the City of London, it is a meeting place for many worlds. The farm provides a green space for children in inner city London, many of whom have never been outside of East London and a place of learning for adults and adolescents who want to learn about sustainability, food growing, animal care and so on.

The aim of the Holistic Goal Formation process was to help the staff members envision what they wanted to see the farm develop into in the next three years. Throughout a whole day of exercises a group of employees and trustees looked at what was important to them and what their vision was for the project. Interesting proposals came up for how to improve communication and give more of a voice to staff members, likewise some creative options were offered for how to create a beautiful, lush and inspiring working place where everyone felt part of a buzzing community project, whether working inside in the office or not. The process will form the basis for a three year business plan for the farm, ensuring that everyone’s voice was heard in the process and that there is a shared understanding of the ethical basis upon which the project base their work.
